After read “Navigating Genres”, I realized that genres are appearing in many different areas. The most impressive one is the genres in writing. There always are beginning paragraph, three body paragraph and conclusion paragraph. This genre is indeed the mainly method to write during several years because there are many and many model essays are written in this method.
Except the conditional genres appearing in writing, there are other textual genres, such as car sales advertisements, recommend letters and admission essay. Now, let’s mainly talk about the car sales advertisement. I believe all of us have seen car sales advertisement wherever in magazine, billboard or internet. Like writing essays, car sales advertisements also have its own genres. It is not hard to find some special points through car sales advertisements. First, the goals of car sales advertisements are telling people the merit and characteristics of their cars and then soliciting more customers to but their cars. Thus, the dealers have to put some information that can be understand by most customers and can attract more people to purchase their cars. Dealers always put some perfectly beautiful pictures of cars and give out short but attractive words to introduce why the car worth to buy and what the social characteristics of this car. Because the pictures will give people first impression of the car. It has to be attractive. Also, people will not cost much times to read advertisement, so the words should be short but competitive. What’s more, most car sales advertisement will give the starting sale prices in the advertisement. Because different cars will have largely different price; some are worth $40,000, and some are worth $140,000. And different customers have different ideal price to buy a car. The price appears in advertisement can tell people whether there can or can not afford the price. Sometimes, deals also put some favorable price to attract more customers. In addition, there also will be some small size but long sentences to specifically introduce the car. The sentences mainly include the kinds of engine of car, engine size, torque, drivetrain and miles that car run uses each gallon of fuel. When people are attracted by the pictures and slogans, they must want to know more information about the car and find out whether the car is or is not really suit for them. These small but long sentences are provided for those who are interested in this kind of car. Then, it is necessary to appear, but it need not be large. Finally, it is the most important one for dealers—the contact information of dealers. I can bet there are specific address, telephone number and email of dealers. Because the goal of advertisement is to solicit more customers to buy the cars. When people are attracted by advertisement, they have to know the address or contact information of dealers and then get more information about the car or even buy the car. Thus, the address and contact information of dealers are necessary to appear in advertisement. These are genres I found from car sales advertisement. Maybe there are other genres appear, but what I found is truly exist in car sales advertisement.
Xudong,
ReplyDeleteCar advertisement is a interesting textual genre to discuss about, because advertisement usually has a lot of rhetorical strategies to attract more customers. In the essay "Steps towards Rhetorical Analysis", the author suggests that advertisement use logos, ethos and pathos to persuade potential customers. You discussed a lot about what is on the car advertisement, and what is the purpose of showing those information, like starting sale price, short but competitive sentence, address and contact information. I think that is very thoughtful and I guess that you might be a car lover. However, I think that your format can be more organized for us to read. You can divide the whole essay into more paragraphs. Overall, good job on PB1A!

After reading through the car advertisement analysis that my classmate, Xudong Cai, wrote on his blog, I can’t help but agree with most of the points he argued. Obviously, the first point that he argued is communication. In many markets, in order to sell a product, you must present yourself clearly and that's what Xudong argued in his analysis by mentioning “first, the goals of car sales advertisements are telling people the merit and characteristics of their cars and then soliciting more customers to (about) their cars.” To back the claims, more supplementary examples are provided in the rest of the paragraph such as providing excellent visuals, listing the components and parts of the car, as well as many techniques that advertisements employ to brand the product onto the market. From a marketing perspective, the writer did an excellent job breaking down a standard type of car advertisement and explained in detail of what each portion contribute to selling a car. On another note, this analysis can be strengthened more by touching up on minor things such as aesthetics-mostly the font size, as well as diction and syntax for few of the sentences such as “what i found is truly exist in car sales advertising,” or “soliciting more customers to but their cars,” and perhaps narrowing down your advertisement analysis down to a specific age group or focus target, because cars comes in many models and sizes such as a SUV, minivan, etc and they all gear towards different audiences and needs.
ReplyDeleteSolid. Car advertising is its own form of textual genre, and there are many components of this type. Pictures are an important factor in selling cars. Like you said, good pictures of new cars must be posted to boost sales. This goes hand in hand with visual literacy, as a picture too far away or not focused would not be a good representation. Having short and concise descriptions with attractive words are also essential. This will grab the attention of the audience, those seeking to buy cars. Great start, next time try separating your work into paragraphs. Good job.
ReplyDeleteOscar,
ReplyDeleteCar advertisements are most certainly their own unique genre. As you mentioned, some of the familiar and recurring patterns in them are “the merit and characteristics” of them, as well as special deals. This too: “The sentences mainly include the kinds of engine of car, engine size, torque, drivetrain and miles that car run uses each gallon of fuel.”
Nice job here. In the future, I’d like you to consider bringing your blog to life a bit more by adding in some visuals. That could also benefit your ability to use direct textual evidence to support your claims.
